Mackinaw Island

Mackinaw Island was a pretty interesting place, I never realized the history behind it. The fort and most of the buildings (14) are intact and have been kept in good repair, with interactive displays and period furnishings. It sits high on a hill, so most of the pictures are looking down, which is great. No autos allowed, lots of horse drawn carriages, bikes galore, and of course good old walking. We hit the fudge place, can't go to Mackinaw and not get fudge. The day started out chilly and cloudy, later in the afternoon the sky cleared, sun came out and the temp got up to about 70. I was happy to have cloudy skies when we hiked up the hill to the fort. We took the ferry back to St Ignace, where our boat is docked. Mackinaw Island has a marina, but it was suggested by allot of other boaters to go to either Mackinaw city or St Ignace for dockage, because the the wake (waves) from the ferries cause the boats to rock & roll on the island.

Tomorrow we will leave St Ignace for Petoskey, MI. We will go thru the "Straits of Mackinaw" and enter Lake Michigan. It's about 3 hours away, and the weather is suppose to be calm, little wind and 1 - 2 foot waves in Lake Michigan. With any luck we will also have sun. Hey Paul & Shirley, we did make it to Mackinaw before christmas, yeah.

Hey Mary & Jim,

What beautiful pictures. It looks like a neat place to really take in. Have safe travels to your next destination tomorrow. Look soon for comments from Mom. I couldn't get the comment edit to work from your house, but I'll look at it again with her.
Love, Lisa

Hi Mary & Jim,

Mackinaw looks just lovely. I guess I have lived a quite sheltered life; I have not seen anything like it and it's not all that far from us. My brother is leaving tomorrow (whew); the estate sale or whatever you want to call it was successful. We hoped to sell all of what was left of my dad's tools. That did not happen. I have lots of glassware that is going to Goodwill. I did sell a lot of other "junk" of mine though. It only took 9 days for the other shoe to drop when my bro put it to me like this: "You will sell the house or buy me out; I need money. Do whatever you want, just get the money." He still forgets that I'm the only one able to sign on the dotted line. Maybe he's planning to pay up the taxes and sweep the house out from under me. If he can do that, he can have the house. The other thing is that since he has filed bankruptcy, he would not be able to take a large sum of cash, so I have to figure out a way to dole it out to him in small amounts since the sale of the house would be deposited in my account. My plan is to call call your friend and get some type of value for the house so I know what I could be working with. A real estate person happened in on the sale (I forget from where, out here someplace) and said to expect $200,000 or slightly under. I think a lot under. Slightly is an exaggeration. So here I am again in somebody else's mess trying to clean things up. Anyway, I love your pics and travelogue. Mary you are quite good @ descriptive writing. Will keep checking your log and keep you posted from this end.

Luv Ya, Sheron
